Skype on Thursday released a new version of its Mac software that brings support for Apple's forthcoming desktop operating system OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, and a few other tweaks.
The update, Skype 5.8 for Mac, marks the return of the slim contact list, which many Mac users have been requesting, Skype said. Users will now once again be able to re-position and organize their contact list however they like.

The update also brings some improvements for video calls with users on smartphones or tablets. Now, if the person you're calling is using Skype for iPhone, iPad or Android, and that person rotates their device from portrait to landscape, Skype for Mac will detect the change and automatically re-orient the video call on your end. This feature is already supported on Skype for Windows Phone.
For paying subscribers, the latest Mac release also brings improved screen sharing. Premium Subscribers will be able to simultaneously display live video alongside photos, so they can see their friends reaction in real-time. This feature will work in one-to-one screen sharing sessions as well as group sessions.
Finally, the new version is compatible with OS X Mountain Lion, which will be available next month for $19.99.

The update follows an announcement yesterday that Windows users on Skype's free service will now see advertisements within the Skype-to-Skype calling window during voice calls. This change was not mentioned as part of Thursday's Mac update.
